VIDEO: APM Terminals Izmir Put into Operation

6 April 2016

The arrival of Anne Sofie general cargo vessel at APM Terminals’ container terminal in Izmir, Turkey has officially commissioned the terminal into commercial operation. APM Terminals Izmir hosted its first general cargo ship in January 2016 and the video below shows the unloading of the vessel and its massive cargo.

The ship brought to the port a cargo comprised of large steel pipes, which were transferred from Anne Sofie to huge trucks that took the cargo to its final destination.

In February 2013, port operator APM Terminals formalized an agreement with Turkish petrochemical companyPetkim to operate a new 1.3 million TEU purpose-built container and general deep-water terminal at Petkim Port in Aliağa, Izmir for a period of 28 years.

The first phase of the operations on terminal development was completed in 2015, including the implementation and testing of the cranes and other container handling equipment. AMP Terminals’ facility in Izmir, the 3rd largest port Turkey, has an annual capacity of 1.5 million TEUs, and ability to handle vessels of 16,000 TEUs. The terminal has now 350 meters of quay and a 16 meter depth, after completing the first phase of development. Another 350 meters are to be added during the second phase scheduled for 2016, to increase the total to 700 meter of linear berth.

The Anne Sofie is a 12,007 dwt vessel built in 2008 by JJ Sietas Schiffswerft in Hamburg, Germany. The owner of the vessel is German-based Sal Heavy Lift.
